Week 3

This week we have been visiting the Church regularly.

On Wednesday it was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.  This is the season in the church which leads into Easter.  We made lenten promises to God.  There has been a shift from giving up things for Lent to doing something extra to bring ourselves closer to God.  After a lovely suggestion,"to grow big as a giant to get closer to God", I refocused the classes suggestions.  They promised to do things to be more like Jesus.

On Thursday we went to the Church again for our Opening School Mass.  This was very long and the children needed to use all their skills to stay quiet and still for an hour and a half.

Tomorrow we will have our first Assembly of 2013.

During Literacy Rotations today we began Guided Reading.  The children work in a small group with me.  Today we read a book called, "If You Meet a Dragon."  Our focus was to look at the pictures first and make predictions about the characters.  We read it together and then had a go in pairs. When practising this the children pointed to each word.  In the example below, the reader was well rehearsed and didn't need to point.  I hope you enjoy this sample.  You could turn the sound off and ask your child to read the book to you and see how they go.  Five children have not completed this book yet and will have a turn tomorrow.
